![]() ![]() The Backyard Battleground is one of the highlights of the experience, and is far more interesting than just cycling through menus to pick game modes like in other games. ![]() They are able to switch between classes in the new hub world called the Backyard Battleground, which itself is the portal to all the other game modes and content in Plants vs. This gives players more reasons to upgrade the various zombies classes, instead of focusing mainly on the plants.įrom the outset, players are encouraged to test out all the different classes, and find one that fits their preferred play style. For example, in the previous game, only plants had access to the tower defense Garden Ops mode, but in Garden Warfare 2 the zombies have their own spin on it, called Graveyard Ops. The zombies are treated like a more integral part to the game in general. Things are now much fairer for the zombies, with neither side of the conflict appearing to have the scales tipped in their favor. The original Garden Warfare seemed to have a balance issue when it first launched, with the plants seemingly having an easier path to victory than the zombies. Garden Warfare 2 also comes across as a more polished game overall, with a sense of balance from the outset. The 16 total classes in the game all have their own special characters to unlock, and they each inject even more personality into the proceedings. It accomplishes this by offering all the same game modes and colorful characters as before, along with new content in the form of the Herbal Assault match type and six new classes. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 feels like a more complete game than its predecessor. Zombies: Garden Warfare's lack of content should be more impressed with Plants vs. We're happy to report that anyone underwhelmed by Plants vs. Despite being such a departure from the franchise's roots, the first Garden Warfare managed to provide a solid gameplay foundation, but many felt as though it was lacking content. For those scared off by competitive online play, there is also Welcome Mat, which pits new players against each other as they learn. These range from team deathmatch and capture point variants to the more unique Gnome Bomb which turns the traditional CTF (capture the flag) game mode on its head. In competitive play, up to 24 players can compete in six different game modes. Although these modes play well and provide an equal amount of thrill and laughs, Garden Warfare fails to add to the genre, instead becoming a family-friendly clone. This game mode, of course, mirrors similar horde-based modes in games from Gears of War to the more recent Overwatch PvE (player versus environment) modes. Once the plants have defeated the final wave, they must escape to an extraction point and survive until the clock hits zero. Furthermore, as players can choose their plant-based class, gameplay offers a large variety of opportunities. Here, the gameplay stays fresh with “boss waves” whereby a slot machine spawns different boss zombies and rewards players with coins. And, as if that wasn’t enough, players can find Flower Pots and Bone Piles around each multiplayer map in which they can place defensive turrets to further support their team, harking back to the series’ origins.Ĭooperative play offers “Garden Ops”, a game mode whereby four players take control of the Plants in order to defend their garden from waves of invading zombies. ![]() Each of these classes has three unique abilities, be it launching area of effect attacks or burrowing underground, which provides that extra punch to spice up the gameplay. The Peashooter and Foot Soldier are the standard ranged grunts the Chomper and the All-Star engage in close-combat the Cacti fight at range while the Sunflower, Scientist and Engineer support their teams in the fight to victory. ![]()
